Walther-von-der-Vogelweide Fountain

The Walther-von-der Vogelweide fountain in the south-western half of the square is made from marble and stands out with its well-balanced dimensions.

The fountain was built in 1676 and renovated in 1960. The fine-profiled, octagonal basin is placed on a four-step pedestal and is crowned by superbly forged spiral grillwork. The baluster in the middle carries two bowls. Water pours in cascades over the edges of these bowls into the basin. On the very top there is a statue of the medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide, a bronze made by Professor L. Szadei in 1960. Because of his literary skills, Walther von der Vogelweide was close to the Duke’s family.
