In 1131 St. Veit was mentioned in a document for the first time, on the occasion of determining the administrative district of the diocese of Gurk whose southern border was drawn along the path that ran “per medium ville Sancti Viti”. The assumption that St. Veit belonged to
Wadl proves that the town remained in a definite relation to the Spanheims without any interruption. In 1149 Duke Henry V received King Conrad III, who returned from the crusade, in St. Veit; in 1174 the same duke held a tribunal in St. Veit. This important act of rule certainly would not have taken place in St. Veit if the town had not already been in ducal possession at this time.
